DIY Velvet Pin Cushions

“I can’t clean my craft room (studio) because I get distracted by all the good stuff I find again.” ~ rusticcrafts.com

This quote resonates with me this week as I found many “lost” or “stored for later” items while cleaning and refreshing my studio.

One of the items I found were these beautiful pink and green ribbon appliques. They have been in my “creative stash” for….well…years! Just waiting for the right time and project. Well…their time has arrived!

February is a wonderful month to embrace all things velvet and frilly…

…and hearts!

And so the velvet pin cushion was born!

This is a picture of the applique packaging. When I searched for them online, they were being marketed as “vintage applique.” Really? I don’t think I’ve had them that long!

You can find them here. If you miss these exact appliques, don’t worry there are other options. here, here, here, here, here, and here!

This is what you need to get started.

For one pin cushion:

Two 4” squares of red velvet

3/4 cup of poly pellets (for weight and stuffing)

Ribbon applique of your choice

Scissors, sewing machine, needle, red thread, and a marking pen

Instructions:

Cut Velvet

Cut two, 4” squares of velvet. Place them right sides together and trim the corners. I used a bobbin as a pattern to round the corners.

Note: You can stitch the applique to the velvet before making the pin cushion if the applique fits within the seam allowance. I hand stitched all of them on after the pin cushions was made.

Sew Pin Cushion

Place the velvet pieces right sides together and sew around the edges with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Leave a small opening for turning.

Assemble and Stuff

Turn the velvet right sides out and stuff with poly pellets.

Stitch the opening closed.

Stitch Applique

Arrange and stitch the ribbon applique to the pin cushion.

Add a few heart topped pins and you are all finished!

Surround them with flowers, paper doilies, sewing accessories, and display them in your creative space…

…on top of a tiny cupcake stand!

Make several extras! Wrap them in cellophane and ribbons and give them away for Valentines Day!

Just in time for Valentine’s Day!
