Repurpose Thrifted Silver Series Part 2 - Pin Cushion DIY

Silver in the Sewing Room

I mentioned in part one of this series that I’ve seen many beautiful silver pieces in the thrift stores recently. So…I decided to offer several different ways to repurpose them.

This pin cushion DIY is a fun and functional way to use silver pieces and add a touch of cool elegance to your sewing space.

The idea works for thrifted or heirloom pieces you have tucked away in your cupboard.

You can POLISH them or leave them with that gorgeous aged PATINA.

If you choose to polish, I recommend Wright’s Silver Cream. It comes with a cleaning sponge and you simply rub it on, give it a good scrub, and wash it off with hot water.

I have to admit…polishing is very zen and instantly gratifying…especially when you are only polishing a few pieces at a time!

DIY Silver Pin Cushion

Supplies

Felt Circle (6 inch)

Polyester Stuffing

Needle and Thread

Small Silver Creamer

Decorative Straight Pins

Instructions

1) Cut a felt circle approximately twice the size of the opening of your silver container. For this small cream pitcher I cut a 6 inch circle.

2) Sew a running stitch around the outside edge of the felt circle. Leave a thread tail at both ends of the stitch.

Note: if you want to add a decorative element…embroidery the felt circle with random flowers, hearts, french knots, or a monogram before you go to step 3.

3) Pull the thread to form a bowl shape.

4) Stuff the felt bowl with batting. Over stuffing works best!

5) Pull the threads to close the felt bowl around the batting. This will create a ball shape. It’s okay if it does not close completely as long as the batting is inclosed. Secure the threads with a strong knot.

6) Place or “stuff” the felt ball into the silver container. If the ball is big enough, it will hold itself in place without glue.

7) Optional: Hot glue the ball in the silver container.

8) Add decorative and functional pins to your new silver pin cushion.

It’s never too early!

Make several pin cushions with red felt and gift them to your sewing friends for Valentine’s Day or a holiday exchange party!

I had two pitchers the same size so I used the second pitcher to hold scissors but you could also repurpose a cream and sugar set in this way.

Small Silver Tray

Small trays are excellent containers for sewing supplies…why not make it a beautiful SILVER tray?

Use the tray to store spools, bobbins, extra pins, a seam ripper, or a needle threader.

Add the pin cushion and other silver containers to the tray and enjoy your new storage unit!
