If you look closely, many of the vintage pieces are signed by the artist.

When searching for vintage china, turn the piece over and look at the back marks.
These maker marks can tell you the age, origin, and maker of the piece you're considering. Some of the back marks are as interesting as the decorative fronts!
Don't be afraid to mix and match different patterns and colors; it can make a visually stunning display!
