Thrifted Treasure Series Part 4 - Champagne Glasses

“Always keep a bottle of Champagne in the fridge for special occasions. Sometimes, the special occasion is that you’ve got a bottle of Champagne in the fridge.” ~ Hester Browne, author

Our daughter is getting married at our barn in September and instead of renting champagne glasses I thought it would be fun to thrift them!

The idea for this “collecting project” was inspired by a 2019 blog post by Heather Bullard.

We need a total of 50 glasses for the wedding reception. I have 12 champagne flutes (a wedding present from almost 43 years ago!)…so…I am on a hunt for an additional 38 glasses.

My self-imposed budget is 99 cents per glass! Yep…99 cents!

Let me say…I can’t afford Goodwill prices for this project so I had to search other places…estate sales…less known thrift stores…and last day garage sale sales. (Most garage sale items are often 50% off on Sundays!)

In a addition to the 99 cent budget, my criteria was/is to look for interesting shapes, heights, and designs. I want all of them to be clear so they will mix and match.

Wedding guests will have fun choosing which glass they want to use!

After a bit of research I discovered the original champagne glasses were coupes. Later the flute and tulip were introduced. You will find more about the history of champagne in an article here!

To date the most exciting thrift find for this project are two Waterford Crystal flutes that I found at a thrift store that supports our local humane shelter. I paid 99 cents and saw them online for $7.95-16.95 each. Score!

Our current champagne glass count is 32 and we used them for a mimosa bar at our daughter’s the bridal shower last weekend.

Julia, our daughters fiance’ arranged them beautifully on a silver tray.

If you have champagne glasses gathering dust in your cupboards…consider dusting them off and setting up your own mimosa bar!

Our friends created a gorgeous “choose your own juice and garnish” bar for the shower. They gathered edible flowers, herbs, and a variety of berries from their garden to add color and elegance to the occasion!

My thrift hunt will continue with a focus on coupe glasses. They are a bit more elusive but I’m up for the challenge…

… and I have fallen in love with their romantic shape!

We often skip over the tiny details of our lives waiting to celebrate the big events. Go ahead…its okay to celebrate the small events too!

Next time you are thrifting…take a look at the glassware! You just never know what you will find!
