5 DIY Yarn Christmas Ornaments

Gather a variety of green yarn, scissors, a yarn needle, buttons, key rings, and a crochet hook to make these quick and easy ornaments!

Note: I bought one skein of yarn that had variegated colors of green but when I started using it, the color changes were far apart…so…I rolled the whole skein into individual balls by color. It was a budget friendly way to get many shades from one skein!

Let’s get started!

Curly Crochet Wreath

This is a very easy crochet pattern I found on MJ’s off the Hook Designs. It is good for beginners because it only uses two stitches. You can find her tutorial here. She jumps right in with the half double crochet (hdc) stitch so you can either slow down the video or you can find a good half double crochet tutorial here.

Loop Wreath

This wreath is a nod to the 70’s macramé days!

Wrap yarn around a piece of cardboard that is about 2.5 inches wide. You will need approximately 20 pieces of yarn so wrap it about 25 times to have a few extras.

Cut one side of the yarn stands to make pieces that are 5 inches long.

Back of the wreath

Front of wreath

Fold a yarn piece in half, place it under the key ring and pull the ends through. Tighten the loop around the ring. Repeat until the ring is very full.

Trim yarn ends to about 1.25 inches long to make a nice wreath shape.

Add one longer loop and tie the ends together at the top to form a hanger.

Key Ring Wreath

This wreath is made with a half double crochet stitch again but stitched around a metal key ring!

Start by covering the ring with single crochets. You will find a tutorial for that here.

When the the ring is very full of single crochets, slip stitch the first and last stitch together and then chain two. The chain stitch count as the first half double crochet.

Stitch two half double crochet (hdc) stitches in the first single crochet. Then move around the ring stitching three hdc stitches in each single crochet. This is very similar to the Curly Crochet Wreath tutorial.

When you have gone around the whole ring with (hdc), slip stitch the first and last half double crochet stitches together to close the wreath.

Use the tail to make the hanger and secure it by weaving the end through the wreath with a yarn needle. Adjust the “waves” evenly around the wreath.

Yarn Ball Ornament

This one is very easy and very cute!

Simply wrap a small ball of yarn. When you reach the size you want, use the tail to form a hanger and then secure it using a yarn needle. Push the needle through the ball and make a knot on the other side. Tuck the knot into the ball so it is hidden.

Hang it “as is” or add a ribbon bow or sprigs of greenery at the base of the hanger.

Tassel Ornaments

This is a classic that never loses its charm!

Wrap yarn around a 4 inch piece of cardboard about 40 times. Slide a piece of yarn under all the wraps at the top of the cardboard and tie it tight.

Carefully slide the yarn off the cardboard and tie another strand of yarn around the top (about an inch below the fold) and tie it tight.

Make a paper tube and slide it over the top of the tassel. The tube should be snug so it will hold the ends together making it easier to trim.

Cut along the bottom of the paper tube and your tassel ends will be even! I learned this trick from a tassel maker when we lived in China!

Add a bow, buttons, or other holiday embellishments to your tassel. Make a variety of sizes for your tree!

I hope you are inspired to make at least one of these ornaments. It’s never too early to start crafting for 2023! PS: they also make beautiful package decorations!
