Food Photography, an Old Truck, and Wisteria Blooms

I’m taking another photography class with talented food photographers, Eva Kosmas Flores and Bea Lubas and it has kept my mind and my camera busy the last few weeks.

This week the assignment was “visual storytelling” and we were asked to find inspiration from an unusual place. So…I chose the wisteria blooms in our garden that have been glorious this year and my favorite prop…”Old Blue” the pick-up truck.

Start with props…create a base composition

I got up very early Saturday morning to style the shoot and catch the golden hour light.

Add food items to the setting

I struggled with this one for about an hour...moving things around and trying different angles.

Everything looked pretty flat until…

What a difference the light makes!

…I moved the truck to get more sunlight…

…and added wisteria blooms around the food. That seemed to bring the background and the food together.

I had to guard the food with my life as we have an abundance of crows and squirrels that are the opposite of shy. In fact…a squirrel ran right between my feet while I was taking a coffee break.

Time for a picnic!

When the light is right and the composition is ready…shooting is easy!

Golden hour light is the best!

What story would you like to tell today?

Behind the scenes can be messy!

The perfect picnic blanket!

Washes like a dream and gets softer with every use!
